Lapog visits Agumbe where Shankar Nag's adaptation of R.K.Narayan's Malgudi stories were shot.

I was on my way to Kollur and Coondapura from Sringeri when my driver told me that we would be passing through Agumbe. Ever since I saw Malgudi Days some years back, I had always wanted to visit Agumbe.

The wonderful world created by R.K.Narayan and its picturization by Shankar Nag had created an image of Agumbe that I just had to see. All newspapers in Karnataka has Agumbe listed first in its daily weather report without fail and the name "Agumbe" itself promises something special!
-----
We set out from Sringeri late in the morning and I was hoping to have lunch at Agumbe. We reached Agumbe well in time for Lunch and I got a shock.

The whole place was deserted. I asked my driver to take me to the Main Road and he told me that we were on the main Road!
I looked around and all I could see was lush green meadows on both sides with some small thatched houses here and there.

We moved along hoping to find somebody to help us out but the whole place was dead. There was a nice looking cricket ground (straight out of the English countryside) but Swami and his friends (1990s version) were non existent.

Actually, the only thing about the place is a meteorological observatory that churns out all that data we keep reading in the Newspaper everyday. There is not even a place where we could get a decent meal. Shankar Nag did a pretty good job setting up this whole place and mesmerising a whole nation with his version of Malgudi.
I was thoroughly disappointed and we started westwards.

But my disappointment was short-lived. Just out of Agumbe is a lush green tropical forest and the road winds through it. Here, on this winding road you discover the best thing about this place.

A panoramic view of the Coastal Plains from the top of the Sahayadri! On a clear day, you can see the emerald land stretching below your feet towards the horizon.

After spending some time enjoying the view, we took the winding road downhill and we finally had our lunch at a roadside Udupi (this was Udupi/DK district, after all ) Restaurant.
